Pilot-Engineer, Cosmonaut-Pilot Instructor. He graduated from the Chernigov Higher Military Pilot School and the Airforce Academy "Yurii A. Gagarin". He worked as a pilot-instructor, and a senior pilot-instructor.
Since 1970, he has been in the Soviet cosmonauts command. He occupied the post of a research-cosmonaut, cosmonaut-instructor and a commander of a spaceship. The total length of his three space flights is 430 equinoctial days, 18 hours, 21 minutes and 30 seconds. The total length of his four open space outings is 10 hours and 16 minutes. He has entered the Guinness book of Records for 1998, in which Yurii Romanenko was acknowledged the most experienced space traveler, with six records set in the field of cosmonautics. A military pilot-instructor third class, a first-class cosmonaut, a paraborne training instructor with the Air Forces.
